‘Family Movie Night’

This artwork explores the chaotic nature of family life. I have conveying how we, as people, adapt within an environment and how we interact with those around us. I have enforced my theme of anatomy and people by incorporating that into an environment which adds character and a dynamic relationship and insight into the subjects, who are my own family.

‘Family Movie Night’ conveys the moments in family life within the home that are not typically praised or shown to the world. Taking inspiration from my own family, I have exacerbated the chaos and dynamics that I have observed and experienced first-hand, especially in the context of lockdown. For many people, Family is where they are most safe and free to be themselves. Each subject is a depicted member of my family (myself to the far right) and I have shown how we each adapt and fit into the dynamic of our family. Using Fine liner and Ink mediums I have created a depiction of my home that is not particularly flattering but an exaggerated reflection of how the house and family members look and act while not attempting to put on a facade for anyone. It is a shameless representation of the essence of my subjects and subject matter.

‘Same but Different’

This artwork is a depiction of each individual member of my family. I am exploring the difference and individuality of each family member. Enforcing the theme with the use of a different colour per family member. I pulled each of my family members from the context of our home to photograph them and create artworks of them and allowed them to choose colours that they identified with, which added to the individuality.

I am exploring the idea of order and chaos and how we are all the same but different. The order being that we are all human and within the same family being represented using one single medium for each subject, while the chaos of our individual personalities, thoughts, interests, age and experiences. Each family member is represented by different colours. The subjects stand within the frame of the artwork with no background, making them the primary focus of the artwork. Further highlighting the individuality of my subjects, the only comparison being other family members around. A representation of the family dynamic and how each member contributes a ‘colour’ to every family.
