‘Life’

This artwork focuses on the beauty of the bodies through body image identity.

In using my subject matter of body image I was able to further communicate individuality from societies’ ‘beauty standards’. These standards create a negative effect on a person’s body image and perception of beauty often of themselves and others. This creates a cycle of people constantly comparing themselves to the perceived standards of beauty which society envisages and promotes.

“Life” demonstrates an intense aesthetic of conflicting emotions. The variations of colours are emphasized by the meaning behind them and are achieved through using acrylic paints. The pink portrait has a love and kindness expression with the intense pink background also enforcing this feeling of warmth. The blue portrait has a confident yet sad expression, balancing the artwork in the centre and the colour on the outside further emphasizing this aesthetic. As for the yellow portrait it demonstrates youth, innocence and happiness as yellow is often seen as the hue of joy, the colour contrasts yet complements the body as it’s the main focus of the artwork. This set of three artworks symbolizes the emotive and striking aesthetic of the artwork itself, as every angle of a single body is different.

‘Self-portrait’

This artwork communicates the huge variety of imperfections, skin tones, types and textures of the face in our modern society, leaving the audience to be influenced by personal experiences and associations with the specific imagery chosen.

Through using gouache, in the development of my artwork I was able to create an individual approach to the portrait symbolising individuality. The approach to my artwork shows individuality as the artwork itself is a person who views themselves as not up to the standards of society. By creating a portrait that was inspired by Frida Kahlo.
