NIKKI, DAVIDSON “Deliria”

This artwork focuses on the significance of the mental illness Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. As a result, someone experiencing this illness may be prone psychological symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and extremely disordered thinking.

“Deliria” focuses on these psychological symptoms while expressing the severity of the illness that can impact on identities. The various depths of Schizophrenia are emphasised by layering seen throughout the subject matter and background. Rough edges surrounding the torn newspaper represent the fragile and delicate state of mind. The heavily texturized sections establish the separated connection between reality and delusions. With the use of these, this illustrative artwork demonstrates the quite confronting, chaotic and vulnerable aesthetic qualities.

Materials: Canvas, Art Spectrum gesso, Matisse acrylic, assorted magazines, newspaper, Hunter Studio Artistry 400GSM Painting paper, Basics oil pastel, Stampin Up foam adhesive sheets, fine liner.

NIKKI, DAVIDSON “Hanging, by a thread - a series”

This series focuses on the emotional impact that is depression and anxiety. These mental illnesses are regularly seen throughout people of all ages, affecting daily lives. Quite often these illnesses are paired together, as some experience the struggle of both depression and anxiety, while others only the one. Thus, the purpose of this artwork. On the left we see the despaired and isolated depression piece, whilst on the right, an overwhelming and trapped anxiety piece, they could be interpreted as two individual artworks or one combined series.

“Hanging, by a thread - a series” establishes the destructive impression in which mental illnesses can create, inevitably marking our identities. The individual layered fabrics provide a textural contrast to the smooth subject matter. The emotional depths of these illnesses are highlighted through the layered collage background. A distinctive use of text throughout the series creates a personal connection with the audience allowing the vulnerability in the artworks to compete with the juxtaposing words.
